What is Honey

Honey is a sweet, sticky food made by bees from nectar collected from flowers. It is used as a natural sweetener and it is great substitute for sugar. Honey has been described as nature’s energy booster and is used throughout the world as a natural and alternative remedy for many ailments.

Health benefits of Honey

Honey can be used to promote good health, to moisturize and disinfect the skin and to speed up metabolism. Honey is a source of carbohydrates, consisting mainly of natural sugars – fructose and glucose – water, and a small amount of vitamins and minerals. The vitamins and minerals help the body to metabolise cholesterol and fatty acids, and antioxidants found within the natural sweetener mean honey is fat free and cholesterol free. Honey also has a healthy Glycaemic Index (GI), which means that the sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream, thereby encouraging better digestion. Honey has been part of our diet for more than 8000 years. It was used in ancient Egypt to sweeten cakes and biscuits. The Romans used honey in prepared food, as did the Mayans in Central America. Other cultures used honey as an ointment for rashes and burns and others to help soothe sore throats.

Honey colors and flavors

Honey color ranges from a very pale yellow that is nearly colorless, to dark brown. As for flavor, the taste of honey can be mild or intense; some types of honey even taste like the flower, such as orange blossom. The color and flavor of honey varies widely depending on what flower it comes from.
