Istanbul is a city located on two continents – Europe and Asia, the two parts of the city connected by the famous Bosphorus bridge.
Istanbul started during the times of the Roman empires as Bizantium, became the capital of the Eastern Empire as Constantinopol in the 4th century and was conquered by Ottoman Turks in 1453. The Turkish name Istanbul became the official city name only in the beginning of the 20th century.
